Dear Missoula Area Boys and Parents:
Please consider this a formal invitation for your son to join the Boy Scouts of
America. If your son enjoys learning new things, is adventuresome and
enjoys the outdoors, he’ll love Boy Scouts and all that it has to offer! If he
is interested in trying his hand at hiking, backpacking, cycling, camping, rafting, and much more,
give us a look. We’re Troop 1911 and our Scout troop participated in these activities and many
more this past year.
Tell me about Boy Scouting.
Scouting has a solid reputation for helping youth develop self-reliance, strong character, respect
for others, good citizenship skills, and physical and mental fitness. For almost a century, scouting
programs have instilled in young men the values and knowledge that they need to become
leaders in their communities and in their countries. Learning basic scout crafts such as first aid,
knots and lashings, knife and ax handling, outdoor cooking, and wilderness survival skills are an
integral part of the scouting program; as is learning to respect and appreciate the outdoors.
What activities go on throughout the year?
In past years Troop 11 has whitewater rafted the Salmon and Snake Rivers, bicycled the Route of the
Hiawatha and Trail of the Coeur d’Alene, went on a geology field trip campout to The Lewis and Clark
caverns, dug for crystals at Crystal Park, winter camped at Georgetown Lake and went skiing at
Discovery Basin, ice fished and did more winter camping on Big Sky Lake, and visited the Big Hole
National Battlefield and Bannack Ghost Town, attended summer camp on Melita Island. hiked the Grand
Canyon at Havasu Falls, bicycled the Trail of the Coeur d’Alene, boated on Flathead Lake, and went
to a week of Boy Scout summer camp on the Oregon Coast at Camp Meriwether (and spent a night on a
submarine in Portland on the return trip). In 2011 we built snow caves at Big Sky Lake in February
and slept in them in below zero temperatures, backpacked 55 miles along the Selway River in the
Selway Bitterroot Wilderness, backpacked to Bonanza Lakes on the Idaho-Montana line, backpacked
60 miles in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, attended a week of Boy Scout Camp at Camp Easton on
Lake Couer d'Alene, hiked 10 mile conditioning hikes almost every other weekend, attended the
Montana state-wide Scout Camporee with over 800 Scouts from across Montana, and had a cross-over
campout at Deep Creek where the new Webelos cross-over Scouts symbolically crossed a rope
bridge to formally join the Troop.
When and Where does Troop 1911 meet?
We meet on Tuesdays at the First Christian Church (2701 S. Russell St. across from the
Fairgrounds and adjacent to the City Life Center) at 7:00 p.m. You are cordially invited to attend
any of our Tuesday meetings. Boys 11 years of age and older (and their parents) are invited.
You'll get a firsthand look at some of our troop activities, and you can visit with our Scouts and
their adult leaders.
